Thank you everyone for participating in the English Village. We had a lot of fun getting to know you and playing games together. We must say goodbye for a while, but we will be back later this year. In the meantime, we hope you all have a wonderful summer break.
Before signing off I’d like to answer a question that I was asked. Several students asked me how to improve their pronunciation and sound more like a “native English speaker”. I have three suggestions.
- English speakers move their jaw, lips, and tongue in a different way than Japanese speakers. This is why it’s hard to make some sounds like “l” and “th”. It’s important to strengthen these muscles. I like to recommend a Youtuber, Hadar Shemesh. Hadar has a real good exercise routine for building the muscles in your mouth to help you pronounce words clearly. I recommend you do these exercises every morning.
- I think it can get boring, or frustrating, standing in front of a mirror practicing a certain sound, or word, over and over again. I’d like to recommend another Youtuber, Daily English (Coach Shane) He has a channel called “Daily Easy English Expressions”. These exercises only take 3 minutes!
- Another fun way to practice pronunciation is singing! You can find popular English songs, with lyrics, on the Youtube channel “Sing King” Karaoke.
I hope you find these suggestions helpful! See you later this year!
Wishing you all a happy and safe summer vacation. See you again in October!
